Topper's Interview

Alternate therapy means healing practices that differ from modern medicine as it is practiced in developed countries. Atypical definition would be "every available approach to healing that does not fall within the realm of conventional medicine". Richard Dawkins, Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford, defines alternative medicine as a "...set of practices which cannot be tested, refuse to be tested, or consistently fail tests. If a healing technique is demonstrated to have curative properties in properly controlled trials, it ceases to be alternative. It simply.... becomes medicine." Alternate therapies may be based on unscientific belief systems or philosophies incorporating spiritual, metaphysical or religious underpinnings, untested practices, pro-modern medical traditions, or newly developed approaches to healing; but today, many people utilize mainstream medicine in conjunction with alternate therapy for diagnosis and healing as they believe alternate therapy to have health-enhancing measures; but no side-effects. I have a passion for reading my daily newspaper. Every morning I wait for it eagerly and read it avidly over a cup of tea. Why do I love reading newspapers so much? Do I seek information, the satisfaction of curiosity, of the basic human hunger for news, I partly do so, but an important reason why I am fond of newspapers is that they provide a variety of reading material and do not demand concentration upon a particular subject which is apt to be strenuous. You are free to read whatever you like and skip whatever you dislike, what you find prosaic or complicated. Indeed, reading newspapers is an art. Since, after all, you cannot read everything in a newspaper, you have to select certain items which are useful or interesting to you. I, for one, do not attach much importance to editorials which are usually written in a more...

When the holy month of Ramzan comes, Idd is not gar behind. The word W brings to my mind visions of fine clothes and wonderful dishes fairs, fun and joy. The long days of Ramzan pass away easily with the eager wait for the coming Idd. Ramzan is a very important month for the Muslims. People try to lead a very pious life. They do not take anything, not even water, during the day. Smoking and drinking and entertainment etc. are given up. People try to have noble thoughts. 'Koran’ is read, prayers are offered and charity is practiced. The belief is, that a man shall earn as much 'good' as possible and free himself of base things and thoughts. This severe life of self denial comes to an end after a month. Ramzan is over. There is an eager wait for sighting the moon. When the moon is sighted, more...

It is very necessary to keep the house safe. A safety door or a security camera at the front door is needed. Grills to be fitted on the windows and balcony. All the electrical points to be out of reach of children. Match boxes, gas lighters, medicines, cleaning liquids to be kept out of reach of little hands. Crockery and other breakable articles in the kitchen to be kept on higher shelves. Children must be taught to put away toys after playing. Anyone (especially elders) can trip and fall and get badly hurt. A little care and we can have a safe time at home.

The season after winter is spring. In winter season, all the leaves wither. The trees become bare because of the cold. But, as spring arrives, there is beauty everywhere. The buds on twigs begin to bloom. New green leaves begin to grow. Flowers begin to blossom. Birds start to build their nest. Insects like honeybees and butterflies are seen fluttering. Flowers bloom in abundance. The entire land is a riot of colours. Roses, lily, daisy, pansy, marigold, and many more are in their best beauty,   Spring makes all happy. There is a bloom all around. The festival of Holi is also celebrated during spring. I enjoy filling my vase with the spring blossoms.

First it was Barbie and now it is Hannah Montana. Hannah Montana is the latest sensation and it’s amazing how Barbie has been displaced by six-yr- olds in favor of Hannah. Hannah Montana is a Disney Show. When Disney promotes something it always ends up big. Hannah, the star of the show, is Miley Cyrus, daughter of country star Billy Ray Cyrus, is the star of the show. In the show, she has two personas - one is the regular teenager persona and the other is her secret pop star persona. What makes this show endearing is that there is a moral to be learned in every episode and it is put across in the most humorous way. Hannah's songs have catchy tunes and the lyrics are never offensive. This makes the Hannah Montana show a popular watch. The fact that Hannah Montana's screen father is actually her father in more...

The World Health Organization defines health as 'a state of complete physical, mental and social well- being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity'; and nutrition as 'an input to and foundation for health and Development’. 'A healthy body is a healthy mind’- that is an old adage that has stood the test of time. Nutrition is the most important factor in maintaining and keeping good health. Nutrition begins with food and includes everything that the body needs in order to live i.e. function and grow. Food that one eats regularly constitutes our diet. Dietary habits are habitual decisions an individual or culture makes. Although humans are omnivores, each culture holds some food preferences and some food taboos. Individual dietary choices may be more or less healthy. The choice of food may also vary according to an individual's genetic make up, environment and health. For a significant section more...

Several students scramble to occupy the front benches of the class-room. They think that to be seated on a front bench is a badge of intelligence and scholarship. They can attract attention of the teacher and flatter him with appreciative nods while a lesson is being taught. They look down upon back-benchers as intellectually backward. I, for one, have always preferred a back bench. I know too well that the back-bencher is one of the most misunderstood souls in the world. It is commonly supposed that those who occupy the back-benches are up to some mischief, for they are strategic places to launch paper-arrows and cat-calls from. In fact, the majority of them are quiet, well-behaved souls. Nor are all of them dunces and duds. Several distinguished scholars, statesmen and administrators, it will be found, have come from the ranks of the neglected back-benchers. Though many back-benchers may not do more...
