Explain why cations are smaller and onions larger in radii than their parent atoms?

    Answer:

The size of a cation is always smaller than the parent atom because the loss of one or more electrons increases the effective nuclear charge. This increases force of .attraction towards nucleus and thus, contraction in size occurs. The size of an anion is always larger than the parent atom because the acceptance of one or more electrons decreases the effective nuclear charge. This decreases force of attraction towards nucleus and thus, expansion in size increases.
