What is a multi-party system? Write a note on it in the context of India.

    Answer:

A multi-party system is found in countries, in which more than two parties have a reasonable chance of coming to power either on their own strength or in alliance with others. Proponents consider that a multi-party system does a better job than a two-party system in representing the variety of interests that exists in democracy. While critics argue that it leads to unstable coalition government, which is incapable to take strong decision on policy-making. In India, we have a multi-party system. There were three major alliances after the election of 2009, e.g.. United Progressive Alliance, National  Democratic Alliance, Third Front, etc.
