What was Rinderpest? How had it affected the African Community?

    Answer:

Rinderpest was a devastating cattle disease. (i) It arrived in Africa in the late 1880's. It was carried by infected cattle imported from British Asia to feed the Italian soldiers invading Eritrea in East Africa. (ii) Rinderpest then spread like forest fire, reaching the Western Africa and Southern tip of Africa too. It killed almost 90% of the cattle. (iii) The loss of cattle destroyed African livelihoods. (iv) Planters, mine owners and colonial governments now successfully monopolized the remaining scarce cattle resources to strengthen their power and to force Africans into the labour market. (v) Control over the scarce resource of cattle enabled European colonizers to conquer and subdue Africa.
