Explain the following terms :   (a) Ferrimagnetism   (b) n-type semiconductor   (c) Forbidden zone.

    Answer:

    (a) A substance in which magnetic domains are aligned in parallel and antiparallel directions in unequal number resulting a net magnetic moment is called ferrimagnetic and this property is called ferrimagnetism. e.g. Fe3O4.   (b) A semiconductor in which doped impurity has more valence electrons than the pure element is called n-type semiconductor. e.g. Ge or Si (Group-14) doped with P or As(group-15).   (c) The energy gap between valence band and conduction band of a substance is called forbidden band (or Brullian zones).
