Why does not formaldehyde take part in aldol condensation?

    Answer:

Aldol condensation involves the nucleophile attack of carbanion generated by one molecule of a particular carbonyl compound on the other molecule. For this, the carbonyl compound must have at least one \[\alpha \]-hydrogen present. Since formaldehyde (HCHO) has no such hydrogen present, it fails to take part in aldol condensation. However, it can participate in cross-aldol condensation along with another carbonyl compound with at least one \[\alpha \]-hydrogen atom e.g. formaldehyde and acetaldehyde.
