     (I) Aldehydes or ketoses with at least one hydrogen undergo a reaction in the presence of dilute alkali as catah to form hydroxy aldehyde also called aldol or hydroxyl ketones also called ketol. e.g.(ii) Ester of carboxylic acid on treatment with phenol o alcohol in the presence of mineral acid as a catalyst gives another ester. This reaction is called trans-etherification reaction. e.g.
