Explain splitting of d-orbitals in octahedral and tetrahedral ligand field.

    Answer:

In octahedral complex all the ligands are lying along both the ends of all the three axes. In octahedral complexes and  orbitals experience more repulsion as they point outward the axes along the direction of the ligand. In tetrahedral complex. d-orbital splitting is inverted as compared to octahedral field splitting because in tetrahedral complex non-axial orbitals are nearer to the ligands than the axial orbitals.
