Anhydrous ferric chloride cannot be obtained by heating hydrated ferric chloride. Discuss.

    Answer:

Hydrated ferric chloride \[(FeC{{l}_{3}}.6{{H}_{2}}O)\] upon heating gets hydrolysed by its own molecules of water of crystallization to give ferric hydroxide which changes to ferric oxide on further heating. Thus, anhydrous ferric chloride is not formed. \[FeC{{l}_{3}}.6{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow{\,}\,Fe{{(OH)}_{3}}+3HCl+3{{H}_{2}}O]\times 2\] \[2Fe{{(OH)}_{3}}\xrightarrow{\,}\,F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}+3{{H}_{2}}O\] \[2FeC{{l}_{3}}.\,6{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow{\,}\,F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}+6HCl+9{{H}_{2}}O\]
