Ferric iodide is very unstable but ferric chloride is stable. Explain.

    Answer:

Iodide ion \[({{I}^{-}})\] is a strong reducing agent and reduces \[F{{e}^{3+}}\] ion to \[F{{e}^{2+}}\] ion. Therefore, ferric iodide \[(Fe{{I}_{3}})\] does not exist while ferrous iodide \[(Fe{{I}_{2}})\]does exist. On the other hand, chloride ion \[(C{{l}^{-}})\] being a weak reducing agent cannot reduce \[F{{e}^{3+}}\] ion. As a result, ferric chloride \[(FeC{{l}_{3}})\]is quite stable.
