Assertion : Crossing over occurs in all four chromatids of homologous chromosome. Reason : One homologous chromosome is called maternal and other paternal.

    A) If both the assertion and the reason are true and the reason is a correct explanation of the assertion

    B) If both the assertion and reason are true but the reason is not a correct explanation of the assertion

    C) If the assertion is true but the reason is false

    D) If both the assertion and reason are false

    E) If the assertion is false but reason is true

    Correct Answer: E

    Solution :

An individual contains two homologous chromosomes of each type. The chromosomes are obtained from the two different presents, father and mother. These chromosomes are called paternal and maternal chromosomes. In case crossing over occurs at one place, one chromatid of each homologous chromosome gets involved in the exchange of segments while the other chromatid remains unaltered. Thus four types - two parental and two recombinant of chromatids will be produced after one crossing.
