The radius of earth is about 6400 km and that of mars is 3200 km. Thus mass of the earth is about 10 times mass of mars. An object weighs 200 N on the surface of earth. Then its weight on the surface of mars will be

    A)  80 N

    B)  40 N

    C)  20 N

    D)  8N

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    Let the weight of the object at earth is\[W\], and at mars be\[{{W}_{m}}\], then \[\frac{{{W}_{m}}}{{{W}_{e}}}=\frac{{{g}_{m}}}{{{g}_{e}}}=\frac{\frac{G{{M}_{m}}}{{{R}_{m}}^{2}}}{{{R}_{e}}^{2}}=\frac{{{M}_{m}}}{{{M}_{e}}}\cdot {{\left( \frac{{{R}_{e}}}{{{R}_{m}}} \right)}^{2}}\]       \[=\frac{1}{10}\times {{\left( \frac{6400}{3200} \right)}^{2}}=\frac{4}{10}\] \[\Rightarrow \]               \[{{W}_{m}}=\frac{4}{10}We=\frac{4}{10}\times 200=80\,\,N\].
