    Why does evaporation cause cooling?

    Answer:

The evaporation of a liquid from its surface occurs because some molecules acquire velocities sufficient enough to escape from the attractive force at the surface. Because escaping molecules have higher kinetic energy, hence the average kinetic energy of the molecules left behind decreases. As average kinetic energy is directly related with temperature, hence evaporation causes cooling.
