  • question_answer
The equation of the straight line which passes through the point (1, - 2) and cuts off equal intercepts from axes, is  [MNR 1978]

    A)            \[x+y=1\]

    B)            \[x-y=1\]

    C)                 \[x+y+1=0\]

    D)                 \[x-y-2=0\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The equation of line which cuts off equal intercepts from axes a (say) is \[\frac{x}{a}+\frac{y}{a}=1\]or \[x+y=a\]                    But it is passes through (1, -2), therefore \[1-2=a\] \[\Rightarrow a=-1\].                                 Hence the equation of straight line is \[x+y+1=0\].
