Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow. (5)
One of the most interesting features about the British Constitution, historically, is that the Constitution was not evolved by logicians. It has grown to what it is through the work of men like you and me-just ordinary people who have adapted the government of the country in order to meet the environment of the age in which they lived and they have always preserved sufficient flexibility to enable that adaptation to be accomplished.
Not that it is extremely important, but it seems to me that one of the reasons why our people are alive and flourishing and have avoided many of the troubles that have fallen to less happy nations is because we have never been guided by logic in anything we have done.
If you will only do what I have done-study the history of the growth of the constitution from the time of the Civil war until the Hanoverians came to the throne-you will see what a country can do without the aid of logic, but with the aid of common sense.
Questions
(a) What does the passage imply about the British constitution?
(b) Why have the common people of England adapted the government of their country?
(c) According to the author, why are Britishers alive and flourishing?
(d) What has the author learnt from history?
(e) How did the Britishers adapt their constitution to meet the environment of the age?

Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear. It is partly the terror of the unknown and partly, as I have said, the wish to feel that you have a kind of elder brother who will stand by you in all your troubles and disputes. Fear is the basis of the whole thing-fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty and therefore it is no wonder that cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand. It is because fear is at the basis of these two things.
In this world we can now begin a little to understand things and a little to master them by help of science, which has forced its way step by step against religion and against the opposition of all the old precepts. Science can help us to get over this craven fear in which mankind has lived for so many generations. Science can teach us and I think our own heart can teach us, no longer to look around for imaginary supports, no longer to invent allies in the sky, but rather to look for our own efforts here below to make this world a fit place to live in instead of the sort of place that the churches in all these centuries have made it.
Questions
(a) Religion, according to the passage is based......
(i) mainly upon cruelty
(ii) primarily upon mystery
(iii) primarily and mainly upon defeat
(iv) upon fear of mystery, defeat and death
(b) Fear is at the basis of.........
(i) terror and defeat
(ii) troubles and disputes
(iii) cruelty and religion
(iv) unknown and mystery
(c) Science has helped people.........
(i) to conquer rule of religion
(ii) not to depend on magic
(iii) to give up strange beliefs
(iv) to understand things and master them
(d) Science teaches us.........
(i) to believe in old precepts
(ii) to believe in our own efforts rather than religion
(iii) to look for imaginary support
(iv) to make churches better places to live in
(e) Religion and science.........
(i) go together
(ii) are alike
(iii) mean the same
(iv) do not go together

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow by choosing the answers from the given options. (5)
1. The Galapagos Islands are in the Pacific Ocean, off the Western coast of South America. They are a rocky lonely spot, but they are also one of the most unusual places in the world. One reason is that they are the home of some of the last giant tortoises left on Earth.
2. Weighing hundreds of pounds, these tortoises or land turtles, wander slowly around the rocks and sand of the islands. Strangely, each of these islands has its own particular kinds of tortoise. There are seven different kinds of tortoises on the eight islands, each kind being slightly different from the other.
3. Hundreds of years ago, thousands of tortoises wandered around these islands. However, all that changed when people started landing there. When people first arrived in 1535, their ships had no refrigerators. This meant that fresh food was always a problem for the sailors on board. The giant tortoises provided a solution to this problem.
4. Ships would anchor off the islands and crew would row ashore and seize as many tortoises as they could. Once the animals were aboard the ship, the sailors would roll the tortoises onto their backs. The tortoises were completely helpless once on their backs, so they could only lie there until used for soups and stews. Almost 100000 tortoises were carried off in this way.
