The weight of a horizontal current carrying wire can be supported by a magnetic field which is

    A)  horizontal and perpendicular to the wire

    B)  horizontal and parallel to the wire

    C)  vertical upward

    D)  vertical downward

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

: Force on a current carrying wire \[=HIl\sin \theta =HIl\]when\[\theta =90{}^\circ \]. The force acts at right angles to length of wire according to Flemings left hand rule. The current carrying wire is along central finger. The weight of wire is along downward direction. The force should act in upward direction to balance the downward acting weight. Obviously field should be along fore finger. The magnetic field is therefore horizontal and perpendicular to the wire.
