    A)  101

    B)  26

    C)  127

    D)  none of these.

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

: An ovary may have one to several ovules. 101 ovules are required to produced 101 maize grains. Each diploid megaspore mother cell of each ovule undergoes one meiotic division to form four haploid megaspores in which only one remains functional. The functional one undergoes three mitotic divisions to produce 8 nuclei embryo sac (1 egg, 2 synergids, 2 polar nuclei, 3 antipodals). Each egg of the 101 ovules produced 101 maize seeds after fertilization. Hence, 101 meiotic divisions are required to produced 101 maize grains.
