If the decomposers from an ecosystem go on strike from functioning as decomposers, the functioning of ecosystem will be adversely affective because

    A)  energy flow in an ecosystem will be blocked

    B)  cycling of mineral and material will be stopped

    C)  both [a] and [b]

    D)  adversely affected for a short period and then function normally

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

: Decomposers are saprophytically growing heterotrophs capable of reducing the complex organic matters of dead organic remains into simple inorganic forms. After the death of organisms of different trophic levels, the mineral elements contained in their utilized biomass are released to the physical environment through the activities of decomposers for recycling, from where these can be reduced by plants. In such cycling of mineral nutrients, both biotic components and physical environments are equally involved through series of chemical reactions and transformations (biogeochemical cycle). As the decomposers form a part of food chain therefore recycling of nutrients and energy flow is stopped if decomposers stop functioning.
