Intergeneric crosses are rarely successful. Which of the following may be used to achieve success in this regard?

    A)  tissue culture

    B)  somatic hybridization

    C)  protoplast fusion

    D)  all of the above.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

: The process of producing somatic hybrids (fusion of somatic cells of two varieties or species) is called somatic hybridization. For the first time H. Harris and J.F. Watkins in 1965, succeeded in fusing the cells of two unrelated species, mouse and man, to produce hybrid cells by protoplast fusion technique. This technique enables to overcome the barrier of crossing between different species and genera. Somatic hybrids in plants were first obtained between two species of tobacco (Nicotiana glauca and N. langsdorfli). Triticale has been created through intergeneric hybridization between wheat and rye. Protoplast fusion, which is a somatic hybridization, is a tissue culture technique.
