: The process of producing somatic hybrids (fusion of somatic cells of two varieties or species) is called somatic hybridization. For the first time H. Harris and J.F. Watkins in 1965, succeeded in fusing the cells of two unrelated species, mouse and man, to produce hybrid cells by protoplast fusion technique.
