The vertical component of earths magnetic field is zero at a place whose angle of dip is :

    A)  \[{{90}^{o}}\]

    B)  \[{{60}^{o}}\]

    C)  \[{{45}^{o}}\]

    D)  \[{{0}^{o}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

The angle of dip (9) at a place is the angle between the direction of earths magnetic field and the horizontal at that place.      \[\tan \theta =\frac{vertical\text{ }component\text{ }of\text{ }earths\text{ }field\text{ (}V)}{horizontal\text{ }component\text{ }of\text{ }earths\text{ }field\text{ (}H)}\] Here,     \[V=0\] \[\therefore \] \[\tan \theta =\frac{o}{H}\] or            \[\theta ={{\tan }^{-1}}(0)={{0}^{o}}\] Alternative: At magnetic equator field is horizontal, i.e., vertical component of earths field is zero. Also at magnetic equator magnetic needle does not stay vertical and so the angle of dip is zero.
