    Glycolysis takes place in ;

    A)  cytoplasm

    B)  nucleus

    C)  plastid

    D)  mitochondria

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    In glycolysis one molecule of glucose is converted to two molecules of pyruvic acid in cytoplasm of cell. This is an anaerobic process and common to both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. The pyruvic acid formed during glycolysis enters to mitochondria. Oxidative- decarboxylation of pyruvic acid takes place in inter membranous space of mitochondria and forms acetyl Co-A. Further oxidation of acetyl Co-A takes place in matrix of mitochondria. Plastid (chloroplast) is the site of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy into chemical energy and storage of it in organic molecule. Nucleus carry the genetic material i.e., it is the control centre of cell and inheritance. The DNA transcribes to form m-RNA and ultimately protein for cellular and other vital activities.
