Brain depends on blood for the supply of:

    A)  oxygen and glucose

    B)  oxygen and electrolytes

    C)  oxygen and ATP

    D)  ATP and glucose

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Brain requires oxygen and food nutrients to supply its metabolic needs. Most tissue of the body can live without oxygen for several minutes i.e., obtain energy from anaerobic metabolism. The brain is not capable of much anaerobic metabolism. One of the reason for this is the high metabolic rate of the neuron so that most neuronal activity depends on second by second delivery of oxygen from the blood i.e., blood carry oxygen to the brain. Under normal conditions almost all the energy used by brain cell is supplied by glucose derived from the blood. Supply of glucose normally stored as glycogen in the neurons i.e., brain also depends on blood for glucose supply.
