Insectivorous plants grow in a soil:

    A)  deficient in iron

    B)  rich in nitrogen

    C)  deficient in nitrogen

    D)  deficient in calcium

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Insectivorous or carnivorous plants grow in nitrogen deficient soil. They feed on insects. They produce hydrolyzing or digestive enzyme such as pepsin, renin etc., by which they hydrolyze the body of insects and absorb only nitrogenous compounds. Thus, they fulfil partial requirement of \[{{N}_{2}}\] from insects. They have green leaves and manufacture their own food, thus they are both producers and consumers. Iron is constituent of ferredoxin and cytochromes, activates catalase, required for Synthesis of chlorophyll and therefore, its dificiency causes chlorosis. Calcium .involved in selective permeability of cell membrane activates certain enzymes, required for development of root and stem apex and plant cell wall. Its deficiency causes stunted growth.
