A sporangium derived from a single cell is called

    A)  leptosporangiate

    B)  eusporangiate

    C)  heterosporangiate

    D)  none of the above

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

If a sporangium arises from single superficial cell it is called leptosporangiate type. The single superficial initial divide periclinaly into outer and inner components eg, Salvinia, Azolla etc. If a sporangium arises from a group of superficial cells, it is called eusporangiate type. They divide periclinaly into outer and inner components. The outer cells form the wall whereas the inner cells give rise to sporogeneous tissue eg, Selaginella, Equisetum, Lycopodium etc. The pteridophyte having two type of sporangia i.e., microsporangia and megasporangia is called heterosporangiate.
