The hormone responsible for ripening of fruits is

    A)  ethylene

    B)  cytokinin

    C)  auxin

    D)  ABA

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Ethylene (gaseous hormone) is responsible for ripening of fruits (climacteric fruits). These fruits are fleshy and show a sudden sharp rise of respiration rate at the time of ripening. Ethylene is produced in the plants from the amino acid methionene. ABA (Abscisic acid) functions as a general growth inhibitors by counteracting other hormones (auxin, gibberallin, cytokinin). Auxins are responsible for cell enlargement and apical dominance. Auxins stimulate root formation on the stem cutting. Cytokinins are responsible for cell division and delay the senescence of leaves and other organs. These are also essential for tissue culture (morphogenesis).
