    The fruit of Solanaceae is

    A)  berry or capsule

    B)  pome

    C)  legume or pod

    D)  drupe

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

In family-Solanaceae, the fruits are berry or bacca. They have a thin epicarp, fleshy mesocarp and a thin endocarp. They usually develop from a superior ovary and their seeds get detached from the placenta at maturity. However, in case of Datura and Hyoscyamus the fruit is capsule.  Pome is a false fruit in which pericarp is not distinguishable into distinct layers. It develops from a syncarpous and inferior ovary. The fleshy thalamus surrounds the ovary, eg, Apple (Pyrus sp), pear (Pyrus sp.). Legume or pod is the characteristic of Leguminosae (Pisum). It develops from the monocarpellary ovary and dehisces by both the sutures from apex downward. Drupes or stone fruits are single seeded fruits characterised by the presence of a stony endocarp. The epicarp is thin and mesocarp is fleshy (but sometimes fibrous as in coconut and in arecanut). Example: mango (Mangifera), coconut (Cocos) etc.
