  • question_answer
A cylinder of 5 litre capacity, filled with air at N.T.P. is connected with another evacuated cylinder of 30 litres of capacity the resultant air pressure in both the cylinders will be:

    A)  \[38.85\text{ }cm\]of Hg

    B)  \[21.85\text{ }cm\]of Hg

    C) \[10.85\text{ }cm\] of Hg

    D) \[~14.85\text{ }cm\] of Hg

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Volume of first cylinde \[{{V}_{1}}=5\]litres Volume of second cylinder\[{{V}_{2}}=30\]litre Hence, total volume \[{{V}_{2}}={{V}_{1}}+{{V}_{2}}=5+30=35\,\text{litre}\] The initial pressure pi at NTP \[{{P}_{1}}=76\,cm\]of \[Hg\] Now from the Boyle's law, \[{{P}_{1}}{{V}_{1}}={{P}_{2}}{{V}_{2}}\] Hence \[{{P}_{2}}=\left( \frac{{{V}_{1}}}{{{V}_{2}}} \right){{P}_{1}}\] \[=\frac{5}{35}\times 76=10.85\,cm\]of Hg
