An example for autocatalysis is :

    A)  oxidation of NO to \[N{{O}_{3}}\]

    B)  oxidation of \[S{{O}_{2}}\] to \[S{{O}_{3}}\]

    C)  decomposition of \[KCl{{O}_{3}}\] to \[KCl\] and \[{{O}_{2}}\]

    D)  oxidation of oxalic acid by acidified \[KMn{{O}_{4}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Autocatalysis is a process in which one of the product behaves as a catalyst. e.g., \[2KMn{{O}_{4}}+5{{H}_{2}}{{C}_{2}}{{O}_{4}}+3{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\xrightarrow{{}}\] \[\underset{(acts\text{ }as\text{ }catalyst)}{\mathop{{{K}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}+2MnS{{O}_{4}}+8{{H}_{2}}O}}\,+10C{{O}_{2}}\] The pink colour of \[KMn{{O}_{4}}\] disappears slowly on reaction with oxalic acid, but the rate of disappearance of colour fastens after some time due to the formation of \[MnS{{O}_{4}}\] which acts as auto catalyst for the reaction.
