In the brown ring test, the brown colour of the ring is due to

    A)  ferrous nitrate

    B)  ferric nitrate

    C)  a mixture of NO and \[N{{O}_{2}}\]

    D)  nitrosoferrous sulphate

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Ring test: To the nitrate salt, add freshly prepared \[FeS{{O}_{4}}\] solution and then cone \[{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\] carefully by the sides of test-tube. A dark brown ring of ferrous nitrososulphate is formed. \[NaN{{O}_{3}}+{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\xrightarrow{{}}NaHS{{O}_{4}}+HN{{O}_{3}}\] \[2HN{{O}_{3}}+6FeS{{O}_{4}}+3{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\xrightarrow{{}}\]                                 \[3F{{e}_{2}}{{(S{{O}_{4}})}_{3}}+2NO+4{{H}_{2}}O\]                 \[FeS{{O}_{4}}+NO\xrightarrow{{}}\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  Ferrous \\  nitrososulphate \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{[Fe\,.\,NO]S{{O}_{4}}}}\,\]
