The parenchyma tissue in aquatic plants (eg, Hydrilla, Potamogeton etc) and some land plants (eg, petiole of banana, Canna) are called aerenchyma, because they make a network leaving wide air spaces (air-cavities)  for gaseous exchange and make the aquatic plants light and buoyant, so that they easily afloat The aerenchyma occurring in the petiole of banana and Canna appear stellate or star like and are hence, called stellate parenchyma.
