    A)  DNA

    B)  RNA + Protein

    C)  DNA + RNA

    D)  DNA + Protein

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is the rod shaped virus. It was isolated in the crystalline form by W M Stanley (1935). TMV is a rod shaped structure, 18nm in diameter and 300 nm long. The protein coat (capsid or shell) consists of 2,130 identical subnunits (capsomeres), which are arranged in a helix around a central hole of 4nm in diameter. The proteins constitute 94.5% of virus. TMV contains a single chain of RNA of about 330 nm in length and runs the entire length the TMV rod. RNA is not present in the centre of the hole but intermeshes with protein subunits. Frankel Conart and Schramm (1955) found that RNA is capable of causing infection.
