Hugo de Vries (1848-1935) was Dutch botanist who born at Haarlem. He proposed mutation theory in order to explain the mechanism of evolution. His theory was based upon his observations on evening primrose, 4i Oenothera lamarckiana growing wildly in a field near Amsterdam. This theory was published in 1901 in his book entitled "Die Mutation Theory".
