'Mammalian thymus' is mainly concerned with

    A)  regulation of body temperature

    B)  regulation of body growth

    C)  immunological functions

    D)  secretion of thyrotropin

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Mammalian thymus is a bilobed lymphoid organ situated in front of the heart in the upper part of sternum. Thymus, which is an endocrine gland is active in young ones but gradually becomes inconspicuous after sexual maturity. Its reticular-epithelial cells secrete a hormone, thymosin, promoting immune competence in young T-lymphocytes. Thymus also secretes a hormone, thymopoietin (thymin), which inhibits acetylcholine release at motor nerve endings. Thus, it is mainly concerned with the production of lymphocytes (T-lymphocytes) and antibodies that keep the young ones immune to some diseases.          Thyrotropin   or   Thyroid   Stimulating Hormone (TSH), produced by anterior lobe of pituitary, stimulates the synthesis and secretion of hormones produced by thyroid gland. Regulation of body growth is concerned with somatotropic or growth hormone secreted by anterior lobe of pituitary. Regulation of body temperature is under control of hypothalamus, so called as 'thermostat' of the body.
