The limbs of a U-tube are vertical and have         internal diameters 0.5 cm and 1 cm          respectively. If the tube contains water, what     will be the difference in the surface level in the                 limbs?                 (Surface tension of water = 72 dyne/cm)

    A)                  0.2938cm

    B)  0.8938cm

    C)                  0.6938cm

    D)  None of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

                    For wider limb, \[\,{{h}_{1}}\frac{2T}{{{r}_{1}}dg}\]                 For the narrow limb, \[\,{{h}_{2}}\frac{2T}{{{r}_{2}}dg}\]                 \[\,{{h}_{2}}-{{h}_{1}}\frac{2T}{dg}\left( \frac{1}{{{r}_{2}}}-\frac{1}{{{r}_{1}}} \right)\]                 \[\,=\frac{2\times 72}{1\times 980}\left( \frac{1}{0.25}-\frac{1}{0.5} \right)\]                 \[\,=\frac{2\times 72}{980}\times \frac{0.25}{0.25\times 0.5}=0.2938\,cm\]
