  • question_answer
A tuning fork of frequency \[480\text{ }Hz\]produces 10 beats/s, when sounded with a sonometer string. A slight increase in tension in the sonometer string produces fewer beats/s than before. What was the frequency of sonometer string?

    A)  \[470\text{ }Hz\]

    B)  \[490\text{ }Hz\]

    C)  \[480\text{ }Hz\]

    D)  \[460\text{ }Hz\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Beats are produced when two waves whose frequencies are only slightly different interfere with each other. \[{{f}_{b}}=|{{f}_{1}}-{{f}_{2}}|\] \[\therefore \] \[10=480-f\] ?..(i) \[10=f-480\] ??(ii) Since, beats decrease, hence \[f=480-10=470Hz\]
