The refractive index of water, glass and diamond are \[1.33,1.50,\text{ }2.40\]respectively. The refractive index of diamond relative to water and of glass relative to diamond, respectively are nearly

    A)  \[1.80,0.625\]

    B)  \[0.554,\text{ }0.625\]

    C)  \[1.80,\text{ }1.6\]

    D)  \[0.554,\text{ }1.6\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    The refractive index of glass with respect to water is \[_{w}{{\mu }_{g}}=\frac{_{a}{{\mu }_{g}}}{_{a}{{\mu }_{w}}}\] Given, \[_{a}{{\mu }_{g}}=1.5,\,\,\,\,{{\,}_{a}}{{\mu }_{w}}=1.33\] \[_{w}{{\mu }_{g}}=\frac{1.5}{1.33}=1.80\] Also;       \[_{w}{{\mu }_{d}}=\frac{_{a}{{\mu }_{d}}}{_{a}{{\mu }_{w}}}\] Given, \[_{a}{{\mu }_{d}}=2.4,\,\,\,\,\,{{\,}_{a}}{{\mu }_{w}}=1.33\] \[\therefore \] \[_{w}{{\mu }_{d}}=\frac{2.4}{1.33}=.6\]
