The most reactive of the following is

    A)  acetone

    B)  benzophenone

    C)  benzaldehyde

    D)  acetaldehyde

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Aldehydes are generally more reactive than ketones. This is because, the two relatively  large substituents in ketones hinder the approach of nucleophile to carbonyl carbon than in aldehydes. Moreover, the two electron releasing groups reduced the electrophilicity of carbonyl group. Hence, the order of reactivity of the given compounds is as \[{{C}_{_{6}}}{{H}_{5}}COC{{H}_{3}}<C{{H}_{3}}COC{{H}_{3}}<{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}CHO\]\[<C{{H}_{3}}CHO\] Thus, acetaldehyde is the most reactive among the given compounds.
