The most common isomerism found in ethers, is:

    A)  chain isomerism

    B)  tautomerism

    C)  metamerism

    D)   optical isomerism

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Key Idea: (i) Chain isomerism: The two isomers have different chain lengths. (ii) Tautomerism: It is characteristic of compounds having labile hydrogen. It is dynamic isomerism. (iii) Optical isomerism: It is possible in compounds having at least one asymmetric carbon atom. (iv) Metamerism: It is shown by compounds which have at two alkyl groups attached to same functional group. Ethers are\[R-O-R\]OR\[R-O-R\]. Since they have two alkyl groups in their structure. So they show metamerism.
