Neo-Darwinism believes that new species develops through:

    A)  mutations

    B)  hybridization

    C)  mutations with natural selection

    D)  continuous variations with natural selection

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Neo-Darwinism is the refinement of the orginal theory of natural selection given by Charles Darwin. Genetic variations i.e., changes in the genes of gametes introduce genotypic difference in the individuals of a population. The genetic variations are caused by: [a] Mutation: Gene mutation refers to changes in the chemical and structural composition of genes. They occur at random. Chromosomal mutation is change in structure and number of chromosomes. [b] Hybridization: It is intermingling genes of two populations of a species or between individuals of two species which are otherwise separated. Natural selection is the creative force which uses the variations and mutations as the raw material from which better adapted individuals with more chance of survival are obtained.
