    In CAM plants stomata are:

    A)  closed to night and open during the day

    B)  closed during the day arid open at night

    C)  never closes

    D)  never opens

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

CAM stands for Crassulacean Acid Metabolism which is a mechanism of photosynthesis involving double fixation of \[\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\text{.}\]It occurs in succulent plants belonging to Crassulaceae, cacti, euphorbias etc., where the stomata remain closed during daytime and open only at night. Crassulacean plants have this   unique   mechanism   to   perform photosynthesis without much loss of water. They perform acidification or dark fixation o\[\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\]   during    night    (phase-I)    and deacidification (phase-Ii) during day to release \[\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\]for actual photosynthesis.
