  • question_answer
A mass of 10 g moving horizontally with a velocity of \[\text{100}\,\text{cm}{{\text{s}}^{-1}}\] strikes a pendulum bob of same mass. The two masses after collision stick together. What will be the maximum height reached by the system now? \[(Take\,g=10\,m{{s}^{-2}})\]

    A)  Zero

    B)  1.25 cm

    C)  2.5 cm

    D)  5cm

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

     Kinetic energy of mass of 10 g is converted into potential energy of the system \[\therefore \] \[\frac{1}{2}{{m}_{1}}v_{1}^{2}=({{m}_{1}}+{{m}_{2}})gh\] or \[h=\frac{{{m}_{1}}v_{1}^{2}}{2({{m}_{1}}+{{m}_{2}})g}\] \[=\frac{10\times {{(100)}^{2}}}{2(10+10)\times 1000}=\frac{10\times 10000}{2\times 20\times 1000}\] \[=\frac{10}{4}=2.5\,cm\]
