Which of the following part of Fimaria, sporophyte is involved in the dispersal of spores?

    A)  Calyptra

    B)  Operculum

    C)  Peristome

    D)  Annulus

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Peristome lies immediately under the operculum, It consists of two sets of long conical teeth one within the other, there are 16 teeth in each set the total being 32. The teeth of both the sets are on the same radii and thus opposite to each other. Peristome of Fundria sporophyte is involved in the dispersal of spores because outer set of teeth respond to changes in humidity and are thus said to be hygroscopic while the inner peristome teeth  do  not  show  hygroscopic movement.
