Photochemical smog formed in congested metropolitan cities mainly consists of:

    A)  ozone, peroxyacetyl nitrate and\[N{{O}_{x}}\]

    B)  smoke, peroxyacetyl nitrate and\[S{{O}_{2}}\]

    C)  hydrocarbons, \[S{{O}_{2}}\] and\[C{{O}_{2}}\]

    D)  hydrocarbons, ozone and\[S{{O}_{x}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Photochemical smog or oxidizing type of pollution is chracterised by the presence of large concentration of ozone, oxides of nitrogen and various hydrocarbons.  It occurred in Los Angeles. Nitrogen dioxide split into nitric oxide and nascent oxygen. Nascent oxygen combines with molecular oxygen to from ozone. Ozone reacts with carbohydrates (unsaturated hydrocarbons) to aldehyde and ketone. Nitrogen oxides, oxygen and ketone combines to form Peroxy Acetyl Nitrates (PAN).
