Net gain of ATP in prokaryotes from a molecule of glucose when oxidized is :

    A)  40

    B)  38

    C)  36

    D)         34

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

A total of 38 ATP molecules arc yielding during aerobic respiration of glucose. In most cukaryotic cells, 2 of these are expended in transporting 2 NADH molecules produced in glycolysis to the mitochondrion. Thus, in such cells, there is net gain of 36 ATP molecules. However, in the prokaryotic cells, all the 38 ATP molecules represent net gain.
