RAJASTHAN PMT Rajasthan - PMT Solved Paper-2008

  • question_answer
Three forces start acting simultaneously on a particle moving with velocity\[\mathbf{\vec{v}}.\]These forces are represented in magnitude and direction by the three sides of a triangle ABC (as shown). The particle will now move with velocity

    A)  less than\[\mathbf{\vec{v}}\]

    B)  greater than\[\mathbf{\vec{v}}\]

    C) \[v\] in the direction of largest force BC

    D) \[\mathbf{\vec{v}}\]remaining unchanged

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Resultant force is zero, as three forces acting on the particle can be represented in magnitude and direction by three sides of a triangle in order.  Hence, by Newtons 2nd law\[\left( \overset{\to }{\mathop{\mathbf{F}}}\,=m\frac{d\overset{\to }{\mathop{\mathbf{v}}}\,}{dt} \right)\], particle velocity \[(\overset{\to }{\mathop{\mathbf{v}}}\,)\] will be same,
