RAJASTHAN PMT Rajasthan - PMT Solved Paper-2009

  • question_answer
Strongest Bronsted base among the following anions is

    A) \[ClO\]

    B) \[Cl{{O}_{2}}\]

    C)        \[ClO_{3}^{-}\]

    D)        \[ClO_{4}^{-}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Conjugate base of weak acid is always strong.
Conjugate base Acid Oxidation state of\[\mathbf{Cl}\]
    \[Cl{{O}^{-}}\] \[ClO_{2}^{-}\] \[ClO_{3}^{-}\] \[ClO_{4}^{-}\] \[HClO\] \[HCl{{O}_{2}}\] \[HCl{{O}_{3}}\] \[HCl{{O}_{4}}\] \[+I\] \[+III\] \[+V\] \[+VII\]
In case of oxyacids of same element, as oxidation number of element increases their acidic strength increases. \[HClO\] is weakest acid, hence its conjugate base is strongest \[Cl{{O}^{-}}\].
