Which of the following is paramagnetic?

    A) \[O_{2}^{-}\]

    B) \[C{{N}^{-}}\]

    C) \[CO\]

    D)        \[N{{O}^{+}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    (i) Electronic configuration of\[O_{2}^{-}\] Csuperoxide ion) \[KK,\,\,\sigma 2{{s}^{2}},\,\,\overset{*}{\mathop{\sigma }}\,2{{s}^{2}},\,\,\sigma 2p_{z}^{2},\,\,\pi 2p_{x}^{2},\,\,\pi 2p_{y}^{2},\,\,{{\pi }^{*}}2p_{x}^{2}\] \[{{\pi }^{*}}2p_{y}^{1}\] As it has one unpaired electron in the \[{{\pi }^{*}}2{{p}_{y}}\] molecular orbital, therefore it is paramagnetic. (ii) Electronic configuration of CN (cyanide ion) \[KK,\,\,\sigma 2{{s}^{2}},\,\,{{\sigma }^{*}}2{{s}^{2}},\,\,\pi 2p_{x}^{2},\,\,\pi 2p_{y}^{2},\,\,\pi 2p_{z}^{2}\] As it does not have any unpaired electron, thus it is diamagnetic. (iii) Electronic configuration of \[CO\] \[KK,\,\,\sigma 2{{s}^{2}},\,\,\pi 2p_{x}^{2},\,\,\pi 2p_{y}^{2},\,\,\sigma 2p_{z}^{2},\,\,{{\sigma }^{*}}2{{s}^{2}}\] It does not have any unpaired electron, hence it is diamagnetic. (iv) Electronic configuration of \[N{{O}^{+}}\] ion \[KK\sigma 2{{s}^{2}},\,\,{{\sigma }^{*}}2{{s}^{2}},\,\,\sigma 2p_{z}^{2},\,\,\pi 2p_{x}^{2},\,\,\pi 2p_{y}^{2}\] It also does not have any unpaired electron, hence diamagnetic.
