Which of the following statement is not true?

    A)  The pressure of a gas is due to collision of the gas molecules with the walls of the container

    B)  The molecular velocity of any gas is proportional to the square root of the absolute temperature

    C)  The rate of diffusion of a gas is directly proportional to the density of the gas at constant pressure

    D)  Kinetic energy of an ideal gas is directly proportional to the absolute temperature

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

It is wrong because the rate of diffusion of a gas is inversely proportional to the density of the gas at constant pressure. \[r\propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{d}}\] According to Grahams law the rate of diffusion is inversely proportional to square root of molecular weight and density. \[r\propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{d}}\]and \[r\propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{M}}\] If one gas has rate of diffusion\[{{r}_{1}}\]and other gas has rate of diffusion\[{{r}_{2}}\]and density of gases are \[{{d}_{1}}\]and \[{{d}_{2}}\]then \[\frac{{{r}_{1}}}{{{r}_{2}}}=\sqrt{\frac{{{d}_{2}}}{{{d}_{1}}}}\] Or \[\frac{{{r}_{1}}}{{{r}_{2}}}=\sqrt{\frac{{{M}_{2}}}{{{M}_{1}}}}\]
