THE INDIAN JUGGLER

Category : Essays

An Indian juggler is a common man. He goes from village to village and from town to town. He is an entertainer in the life of Indians; at times he is also seen in the cities entertaining a crowd along the road. He has no fixed place where he can live. He moves from place to place. You cannot see him with his wife and children. He stays in a village or town for two or three days. Then he leaves for some other place. Generally he continues his tour within a district only. Sometimes he visits other districts also.
His appearance and dress are quite peculiar. He ties a big turban on his head. He keeps a beard. A kurta with long broad sleeves, a fat bag on his shoulder which has many things give him a peculiar appearance. He is generally tall. His face shows that he is a shrewd fellow. His eyes are cunning and vigilant.
His method of showing tricks is wonderful. He moves his hands very cleverly at the time of giving his show. Our eyes cannot follow them. He is one against many. All the spectators try to catch his tricks. But he baffles them all. We have seen him at his work a hundred times. But we have always failed to catch his tricks. He does several tricks and feats. He generally begins his tricks . With producing a rupee from a dust. Then he splits it into two rupees. Then two are split into four and these four into eight and so on. He goes on with his tricks until he has before him a small heap of rupees.
His next trick is the throwing of small bails one by one into the air. Then he receives them back. He does not let any of them fail on the ground. He plants a small mango tree in a pot. He covers it with a cloth, after some time he takes the cloth off. Lo! a tiny mango tree . With ripe mangoes is seen on the pot.
But of all the tricks the most surprising is the basket trick. His boy gets into a large basket. He lies in it. The basket is then covered with a piece of cloth. The juggler takes his long knife. He runs it through the basket several times. We hear the boy's crying with pain- We get angry because we think that the boy has been killed but when the boy jumps out of the basket, all feel overjoyed. Although the juggler shows wonderful tricks to so many people, yet his income is very small. He is a simple man and he cannot exploit people. So he fails to earn much
A juggler does his work honestly He pleases people. He thinks that others will please him for his service but he is mistaken.
