How To Write An Essay

To write an essay is to try to express in words our ideas on a given subject.

A number of ideas will come into our minds at the same time. They must be arranged in order. A certain method must be followed in order to write a good essay.

You must first be careful to choose the right subject. Two or three subjects will be given to you. You must write on one of these subjects. Read all the subjects and see which one you know best.

Think over the subject for a few minutes. Put down all the ideas that come into your mind. Before you start writing, arrange the ideas in proper order.

Then start writing. Put each idea into a single paragraph. Write in short simple sentences. Let your paragraphs be short. If you use simple words and short sentences, you will not go wrong in the use of English grammar. Your essay must be complete and well planned.

This book gives you a lot of essays. They are of different kinds. They deal with places, scenes, events, persons, favourites, visits, personal experiences, autobiographies etc. The language used is simple and clear. These essays are meant to cover your course in English Composition.

At the end of each essay you will find a list of difficult words and Phrases and their meanings. You must keep on adding to the list of words you know. Then you will be able to write better essays.

Let us take a few examples and see how we must arrange our ideas to write a good essay. Suppose we are asked to write on "A Visit to a Dentist". Some of the ideas that strike us are:

My fear of the dentist-an occasion to visit him- a bad toothache-phone and make an appointment-the sight of patients in the dental clinic-their suffering and its effect on me-how I felt when my turn came to go in—how the dentist treated me-what he charged me and the impressions left on my mind.

All these points must not be included in the essay. We must select only the most important ones and arrange them in order. (1) An occasion to visit a dentist. (2) The sight of patients suffering pain and its effect on my mind. (3) My feelings as I awaited my turn to go in. (4) How the dentist treated me-his fees. (6) My return and the impressions left on my mind.

Now we can write the essay with the help of the points mentioned above.
